Cooking steps
Wise Man Goat Milk Soap Recipe
Step 1: Prepare fats
- Weigh 12 oz vegetable shortening, 5 oz coconut oil, and 4 oz olive oil using a kitchen scale.
- Place all fats in a pot and melt them together on the stove.
- Heat the fats to between 90-100°F and then allow to cool to about 90-95°F.
Step 2: Prepare lye solution
- Partially freeze 12 oz goat's milk until it crystallizes.
- Wearing protective gear, slowly add 3 oz lye crystals to the goat milk in a stainless steel bowl.
- Stir gently with a stainless steel spoon until the lye crystals are fully dissolved and the solution warms up to about 90-95°F.
Step 3: Combine fats and lye solution
- Slowly add the cooled melted fat mixture to the lye-goat milk solution while stirring.
- Use an immersion stick blender to mix the solution thoroughly, keeping the blender immersed to avoid splatter.
- Alternate blending and manual stirring until the mixture reaches "trace" consistency (when drips leave visible trails on the surface).
Step 4: Add essential oils
- Just before reaching trace, add a few drops of frankincense and myrrh essential oils.
- Continue blending until the mixture thickens further.
Step 5: Pour into mold and set
- Pour the soap mixture carefully into a soap loaf mold.
- Tap the mold gently to remove air bubbles.
- Place the mold in the freezer immediately to control the heat generated by saponification.
- Leave in the freezer for about 5-6 hours, then remove and let it continue to harden at room temperature.
Step 6: Unmold and cut soap
- After 24 hours, check if the soap is firm enough to unmold.
- Carefully remove the soap from the mold.
- Use a wire or soap cutter to slice the loaf into individual bars.
- Stand bars upright on a rack to allow air circulation.
Step 7: Cure the soap
- Allow the soap bars to cure for at least 2-3 weeks before use.
- Longer curing (up to 6 months) improves the soap's quality and hardness.
Safety Notes:
- Always wear protective gear including goggles, gloves, mask, and long sleeves.
- Work in a well-ventilated or outdoor area.
- Handle lye with extreme caution as it is caustic and can cause severe burns.
- Use stainless steel or plastic utensils; avoid wood.
Enjoy your homemade wise man goat milk soap!
